Crop or blur-pad, in the tab

Video to 9:16 converter

A 16:9 screen recording, a Twitch clip, or a 24 fps AI render is the usual input. Shorts will not shelf it. TikTok and Reels will crop or pad it without asking you. This converter makes the 1080×1920 file first, then shows you whether the crop ate a caption or a face.

Crop keeps the center and scales to 1080×1920. Blur-pad fills the frame with a blurred copy of the same shot and puts the full 16:9 picture in the middle. Both re-encode to H.264 High, AAC, 30 fps, with the moov atom at the front. The encoder is a single-threaded ffmpeg build loaded only after you click.

Drop a clip

MP4, MOV, WebM, or a thumbnail. Duration, resolution, aspect, fps, codec, and file size are read here. Nothing is uploaded.

What to do with it

  • Run the check before you convert. A landscape file fails Shorts on aspect and fails Reels if it is under 30 fps.
  • After the crop, look at the overlay. Center-cropping a gameplay HUD often leaves the HUD in the right-hand button column.
  • Blur-pad keeps the whole frame and usually clears the collision, at the cost of looking like a pad.
  • Trim and compress are separate buttons: 140 s, 90 s, 3 min, 300 MB, 512 MB.

TikTok specs

Web uploads through TikTok Studio run up to 30 minutes. 720×1280 is the published floor and 1080×1920 is the size creators should actually export.

Official safe zone, 1080×1920

240 top / 660 bottom / 120 left / 120 right

Scaled ×1.5 from TikTok's 720×1280 in-feed template (top 160, bottom 440, sides 80). The right action column is an approximate cited range of about 180–300 px wide starting near y=840; this overlay draws the wide end, 300×420.

Measured safe zone, 1080×1920

200 top / 500 bottom / 0 left / 250 right

Organic write-ups disagree: top 130–200, bottom 370–500, right rail 140–250. Measured mode draws the high end of that range. A left inset is not consistently published, so it stays 0. See also https://www.socialync.io/tools/safe-zones.

Reels can run 20 minutes, but anything past 3 minutes is a poor bet for new audiences. The Help Center wants at least 30 fps.

YouTube Shorts specs

A Short is square or vertical and at most 3 minutes. Google's ad safe zone (288 / 672 / 48 / 192) is stricter than most organic templates.

CheckSafe.Zone lists Shorts top and bottom at 380 px, which disagrees with Google's 288 / 672 ad image. Side insets were not recorded from that page, so measured mode does not invent them.

Questions

Does the converter upload my video?

No. ffmpeg.wasm runs in the page. The first conversion downloads about 30 MB of encoder code from this site, then the rest stays on the device.

Crop or blur?

Crop when the subject is in the center and you want a real full-screen Short. Blur-pad when the edges of the 16:9 frame have information you cannot lose, like a HUD or a second person.

What does the file come out as?

1080×1920 MP4, H.264 High, AAC at 48 kHz when the source has audio, 30 fps, fast start. Images download as PNG instead.
