Reels safe zone

Searchers looking for a Reels safe zone usually mean Meta's ads diagram: 14% clear at the top, 35% at the bottom, 6% on the sides. ClipLint draws that once and uses it for both Instagram and Facebook, with a louder caveat on Facebook because nobody has confirmed the organic player matches the ad.

The length rules are not the same. Instagram allows 20 minutes and discourages anything past 3 minutes for new viewers. Facebook organic has no cap, and the Page API stops at 90 seconds.

Drop a clip

MP4, MOV, WebM, or a thumbnail. Duration, resolution, aspect, fps, codec, and file size are read here. Nothing is uploaded.

What to do with it

  • Put captions in the middle band. The bottom 672 px is the part the username, caption, and audio row occupy in the ads guide.
  • Side margins are only 65 px. The dangerous edge on Reels is the bottom, not the right rail the way it is on TikTok and Shorts.
  • Export 1080×1920, H.264, AAC, 30 fps, moov at the front. That single file also satisfies the Instagram frame-rate floor.
  • Download the PNG from the overlay and import it as a guide layer. It is transparent and 1080×1920.

Instagram Reels specs

Reels can run 20 minutes, but anything past 3 minutes is a poor bet for new audiences. The Help Center wants at least 30 fps.

Official safe zone, 1080×1920

269 top / 672 bottom / 65 left / 65 right

Assumed identical to Instagram Reels (14% / 35% / 6% / 6%) because Meta's Reels ads guidance uses one safe zone for both apps. Not confirmed for the Facebook organic player. See also https://sproutsocial.com/insights/social-media-video-specs-guide.

Questions

What is the Reels safe zone in pixels?

269 top, 672 bottom, 65 left, 65 right, which is 14%, 35%, and 6% of 1080×1920. Verified against the October 2026 research pass. Source confidence is cited, not a freshly fetched Meta PDF.

Which Reel length should I actually cut to?

Under 90 seconds clears the Facebook API and Instagram's reach recommendation. Under 3 minutes stays inside the Shorts cap and Instagram's recommended window. Under 140 seconds also clears free X.

Can I use the same template for Stories?

No. Stories use a different UI. This page is the Reels player only.
