16:9 trailer to a 9:16 clip

Game trailer clips

A game trailer is usually 16:9, and longer than a short. Pull one moment out of it, about 15 to 60 seconds: the hook, a mechanic, or a look at the world. That range is a cutting suggestion. It is not a limit in the rules file. The length, frame, and file-size numbers live in the tables further down, which are read from that file.

Then make the frame 9:16. A center crop fills the phone and drops the left and right of the trailer. A letterbox with a blurred background keeps the whole 16:9 picture in the middle. The checker on this page can do either in the browser. Export, then run the vertical clip so you can see whether a logo, a caption, or a store button sits under the UI.

Drop a clip

MP4, MOV, WebM, or a thumbnail. Duration, resolution, aspect, fps, codec, and file size are read here. Nothing is uploaded.

What to do with it

  • Shorts fail past 3 minutes, and a 16:9 file is not a Short. Instagram allows 20 minutes and warns past 3 minutes. Free X fails past 2 minutes 20 seconds. The Facebook Page API warns past 90 seconds, and organic Facebook has no length cap in the rules. A 15 to 60 second moment sits inside all of those.
  • Crop when the action is in the center of the trailer. Letterbox with a blurred background when a HUD, a logo lockup, or a second character is on the edge and you cannot lose it. The checker labels that second fix Pad to 9:16. Both exports are 1080×1920 at 30 fps. Instagram's minimum is 30 fps. Facebook's cited minimum is 24 fps, so 24 passes Facebook and fails Instagram.
  • Keep the game logo, burned-in captions, and the store line (wishlist, Steam, available now) in the clear part of the 9:16 frame. The tables list each app's top, bottom, left, and right inset on a 1080×1920 frame, official and measured, from the rules file. TikTok's official zone also has an action column on the right. X has no safe zone in the file, so none is drawn. Combined mode uses the largest inset stored for each edge and leaves X out.
  • Drop the finished clip on the checker above before you post. It reads duration, resolution, aspect, frame rate, codec, and file size on this device, then scores TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Facebook Reels, and X. Scrub to a frame that shows the logo and the store button. Nothing is uploaded.

TikTok specs

Web uploads through TikTok Studio run up to 30 minutes. 720×1280 is the published floor and 1080×1920 is the size creators should actually export.

Official safe zone, 1080×1920

240 top / 660 bottom / 120 left / 120 right

Scaled ×1.5 from TikTok's 720×1280 in-feed template (top 160, bottom 440, sides 80). The right action column is an approximate cited range of about 180–300 px wide starting near y=840; this overlay draws the wide end, 300×420.

Measured safe zone, 1080×1920

200 top / 500 bottom / 0 left / 250 right

Organic write-ups disagree: top 130–200, bottom 370–500, right rail 140–250. Measured mode draws the high end of that range. A left inset is not consistently published, so it stays 0. See also https://www.socialync.io/tools/safe-zones.

Instagram Reels specs

Reels can run 20 minutes, but anything past 3 minutes is a poor bet for new audiences. The Help Center wants at least 30 fps.

YouTube Shorts specs

A Short is square or vertical and at most 3 minutes. Google's ad safe zone (288 / 672 / 48 / 192) is stricter than most organic templates.

As of June 2025 Meta treats Facebook video as Reels and dropped the organic length cap. The Page API is still 3–90 seconds.

Questions

How long should a trailer clip be?

One moment, usually 15 to 60 seconds. That is a cutting suggestion, not a number in the rules file. The caps the checker uses are in the spec tables: Shorts fail past 3 minutes, Instagram warns past 3 minutes and allows 20 minutes, free X fails past 2 minutes 20 seconds, and the Facebook Page API warns past 90 seconds. Organic Facebook has no length cap in the rules.

Should I crop the trailer or letterbox it?

Crop when the subject is in the center and you want the clip to fill the player. Letterbox with a blurred background when the edges of the 16:9 frame have something you need, such as a HUD or a logo. The Pad to 9:16 fix keeps the full frame and fills the bars with a blurred copy of the same shot. The video to 9:16 converter page is the same pair of fixes. Both come out at 1080×1920.

Where can the logo and the store button sit?

In the area each safe zone leaves clear. Read the insets from the tables on this page rather than from memory. They are the rules file: top, bottom, left, and right for TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook, plus TikTok's action column. Measured mode is filled in only where the file has a second set of numbers. X is omitted because the file has no safe zone for it. A logo in the lower third, or hard against the right edge, is the usual thing that ends up under the buttons.
